The album fulfils the brief of being a fresh primer for the casual or new listener, covering as it does the band’s undisputed classic tracks from the 71-79 imperial era, including Money, Wish You Were Here, Another Brick in the Wall part 2, and Comfortably Numb. However, a couple of things may also appeal to the dedicated fan. Notably the new collection includes the first official release on CD and vinyl of the integrated version of Pigs on the Wing parts 1+2 with additional guitar solo. This was created back in 1977 exclusively for the 8-track cartridge release of Animals, and has been taken directly from the original 8-track master found in the band’s archive. My own modest contribution was being asked to sequence the album in classic Floyd style as a continuous listening experience, and in order to do this I accessed the original multitracks to lift out some of the sound effects to create crossfades between the tracks.

]]><![CDATA[Motörhead - On Parole]]>https://remixes.stevenwilsonhq.com/p/motorhead-on-parolehttps://remixes.stevenwilsonhq.com/p/motorhead-on-paroleTue, 10 Mar 2026 10:31:24 GMTOne of my first musical loves as a kid was the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) genre, so you can imagine I had a lot of fun remixing one of the seminal bands of the era Motörhead’s On Parole album for its 50th anniversary.

The album was originally intended to be the band’s debut album but was subsequently shelved, before being released 3 years later by the band’s former label after they had broken through with classic albums like Overkill and Bomber. The album comes across like a more stripped down version of Lemmy’s former band Hawkwind than what they would later become, even with a few psychedelic touches, but as well as the stereo remix I was able to pull of a fairly simple but effective (I think) Atmos mix. Released on 18th April for Record Store Day as a coloured vinyl, and the day before as a 4 disc set including my new stereo mix on CD, the Atmos mix on Blu-Ray, and 2 further CDs containing the complete session reels mixed by Richard Digby Smith.

I was of course on tour most of the year, so most of the work was done in 2023-24 or even earlier, but almost all seemed to pile-up for release in the last 6 months, leading people to speculate if I had a clone or ever slept!

A personal highlight was my new stereo / Atmos mix of the soundtrack to Pink Floyd at Pompeii, which was screened worldwide in cinemas and reached number one in the UK album chart.

Other releases I had the honour to be involved with were Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, The Rolling Stones - Black and Blue, Phil Collins - No Jacket Required, New Order - Brotherhood, Deep Purple - Made in Japan, Jethro Tull - Still Living in the Past, Spandau Ballet - Everything is Now, The Who - Who Are You, Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah, and right at the end of 2025 another personal favourite, Jeff Buckley - Grace. Additionally, Atmos updated 2025 editions of several albums I’d already remixed in the past included classics by XTC, Yes, Tears for Fears, King Crimson and Chicago.

Amongst renewed interest, notably a new documentary It’s Never Over Jeff Buckley, I’m honoured to say I was commissioned to create a Dolby Atmos mix of Grace, something I took on conscientiously, since the original production and mix by Andy Wallace is pretty much perfect.

As with the previous deluxe sets for The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge, I was invited to expand my original 5.1 mix into a brand new Dolby Atmos mix. The album is such a complex piece of work, arguably one of the most uncompromising and polarising albums in the entire genre history of progressive rock, so I spent a long time working on the Atmos mix to arrive at something which I hope does the ambition and scale of the music justice.

The box set features a remaster of the (frankly definitive) original Eddie Offord stereo mix on both CD and vinyl, as well as my stereo, instrumental stereo and 5.1 remixes from 2016 in slightly revised form, plus various live versions and rarities, including the single edits I created for the original Panegyric edition.

These now include brand new stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes, as well as complete session audio, elemental mixes and the original stereo mixes in high resolution. I first remixed the albums with Robert 15 years ago from 48K files, but these new versions have been substantially revised and this time mixed from 96K transfers of the multitrack tapes.

These blu-rays also feature dedicated 5.1 surround sound and 96/24 PCM stereo and stereo instrumental remixes. Remasters of the original stereo mixes are also included, meaning that each blu-ray features a total of 5 different audio streams of the album.

Note that for Brotherhood, the multi-track master tapes of ‘As It Was When It Was’ and ‘Broken Promise’ were not available, so those two songs were up-mixed using the 2024 stereo remaster of the original mix. On a more positive note, this disc also includes as a bonus track the full version of non-album single State of the Nation in remixed stereo, 5.1 and Atmos form.

The original album included 14 hit singles recorded between 1980-84, but this massively expanded new edition adds 3 more discs of later singles, alternate versions, B-sides and 12 inch remixes, and 2 blu-rays of videos and TV appearances. There is no immersive audio element to this release, but as I did for Lament last year, I have created extended remixes of four singles that were not given any 12 inch mix treatment at the time: Hymn (10.45), Sleepwalk (6.57), The Thin Wall (9.40), and Visions in Blue (8.48). As with those Lament reworkings (which seemed to go down very well with fans) these new remixes take an old school eighties approach, being sonically faithful to the original singles and using only material from the multitrack tapes.

The Collection deluxe edition is limited to 5,000 units worldwide and comes in a large format 12-inch box with rigid-board slipcase and two 20-page booklets. Released on 5th December.

The stereo remix will be issued on multiple CD and vinyl formats, with deluxe 4CD and 5LP editions additionally including Dolby Atmos and a dedicated 5.1 mix (in other words not downmixed from the Atmos). My aim with the spatial versions has to been to place you in the middle of the studio with the band (a similar approach to the one I took with my spatial remix of Van Morrison’s Moondance). As always my stereo remix is faithful to the original, just looking for more clarity without impacting the magic that is fundamental to the Stones’ sound. The box sets also include a live show from Earls Court, a TV special from Paris, a disc of out-takes and jams, and a 100 page hardback book. 2CD and 2LP editions include the stereo remix and the out-takes and jams. Note that I only worked on the album itself, not on the out-takes and jams or live material.

Editions include a 7CD/blu-ray box set (featuring 33 unreleased tracks, including demos and BBC sessions), a cut down 2CD version, a double vinyl of my new stereo mix, and a stand alone blu-ray, the latter of which is exclusively available from the Super Deluxe Edition website: https://superdeluxeedition.com/news/frankie-goes-to-hollywood-welcome-to-the-pleasuredome-reissue/

The album features the three UK No 1 singles ‘Relax’, ‘Two Tribes’ and ‘The Power of Love’ alongside the 12 minute title track which in single-form reached No 2. In 1984 the band were so dominant in the UK that even their “FRANKIE SAY…” T-shirt sales apparently could have placed them in the top 10 of the singles chart!

I have remixed the album in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and stereo. The original 1984 stereo mix is immaculate, but, as always, recreating it (quite a task which I talk about in the sleeve notes) was a step on the way to mixing the surround versions, and it has given me the opportunity to also make a stereo instrumental version of the whole album, along with 5.1 and Atmos instrumentals. Note that all instrumental versions are exclusive to the SDE blu-ray and do not appear on the blu-ray included with the box set.

Both versions of the blu-ray also feature the original 1984 stereo mix of Welcome to the Pleasuredome and six bonus tracks (mostly B-sides) remixed in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and stereo.

At the time the album came out I was a big fan of the 12-inch mixes of the singles, as they completely reconstructed and reimagined the songs into widescreen cinematic experiences, arguably the beginning of modern remix culture as we know it. So in homage I have taken the opportunity to create a unique extended mix of the song ‘Welcome to the Pleasure Dome’, called the ‘Supernova’ mix, which runs for a whopping 30 minutes! I think this is one of the best things I’ve ever done, and if you’re a fan of those old 12-inch mixes I think you will love this.

This is the second release under the new curatorship of the band’s catalogue by Sony Music, after Pompeii earlier this year. The package is primarily centred around the original album, studio out-takes, and a brand new Atmos mix of the album by James Guthrie, but once again I’m honoured to have been involved, this time in restoring a much loved live bootleg recording of the band.

Unfortunately no properly recorded multi-tracks of Pink Floyd live were made during the Wish You Were Here era, so what we are left with are the recordings made by fans attending the shows. One of these is regarded as the best quality recording of the band at the time, made at the Memorial Sports Arena, Los Angeles on 26th April 1975 by concert attendee Mike Millard. For a long time this legendary recording has been in circulation, with various transfers made from the original cassette master over the years.

More recent transfers have better fidelity, but suffer more from tape degradation and dropouts as the tape has aged, so my role was primarily to research all of the available versions and compile what I hope is a definitive master, repairing as many of the dropouts, level fluctuations and other anomalies as possible. To this new edit I applied minimal mastering, but without wanting to make the recording sound too hyped or processed, so it still sounds essentially like the excellent audience bootleg recording it always was - no AI here! (And for those that are particular about mastering compression, note all the remastered LA75 tracks “score” DR12-DR13 in dynamic range terms.)

Wish You Were Here 50 will be released in multiple physical formats including 3LP, 2CD, Blu-ray, and a deluxe box set on 12th December, with the restored LA show appearing on the stand-alone blu-ray and the blu-ray included in the deluxe set.

The blu-ray in the box set contains my new mix in stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos form, plus 7 bonus stereo tracks of alternate versions. The standalone blu-ray exclusively adds stereo instrumental mixes, but note that this edition is only available from the Super Deluxe Edition website, and to secure a copy it must be ordered during the next 2 week pre-order window.

Released in August 1978, the album was a commercial success, peaking at No 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart, where only the soundtrack to the Grease prevented it from hitting the top spot in the USA. The record also reached No 6 in the UK album charts. Who Are You was the band’s final studio album to feature Keith Moon, who died just three weeks after it was released. The album showcased some of Pete Townshend’s most complicated arrangements, with multiple layers of synthesizer and strings, including songs envisaged for his Townshend’s never realised Lifehouse project.

The forthcoming Deep Purple Made in Japan remix is a case in point, as it was originally done back in 2014 (though I've revised it for the new edition, let’s say I’ve learned a lot since those days). I’d actually got used to the idea that it would never be released, so that was a pleasant surprise. Meanwhile there are other projects abandoned on my hard drive that are presumably the victims of inertia, changing record company plans, artist politics, or a combination of all of the above. Anyway I digress…

In 2022 I had the pleasure of remixing Grateful Dead’s albums American Beauty and Europe 72 in Atmos. However 3 years before that I had also been invited to create a new mix of their 1975 album Blues for Allah, which for whatever reason never got the green-light at the time. Now to celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary the SW version will finally be issued, and even better it's being made available in high resolution on a physical blu-ray which includes my 2019 stereo, instrumental stereo, and 5.1 mixes, plus a 2022 Atmos mix. It also has 2 bonus alternate stereo mixes, including a version of the 12 minute title track which includes many parts that were not used in the original. I’m happy about all this, it sounds great (well I think), and it’s my favourite Dead album, their most experimental and progressive you might say. So better late than never.

Released in the same year as the musical watershed moment of Live Aid, the album was massive - and deservedly so, it’s simply one of the best pop records from an era of so many brilliant pop records.

The primary purpose was to create 5.1 and Atmos versions, as the original stereo is definitive and one of the best sounding live records of all time. Still the record company have elected to also include my new stereo mix - a step along the way to creating the surround versions - on one CD of the set, and on 2 vinyl records included with a 10LP set. The performances on Made in Japan were recorded economically on 6 channels of an 8 track tape (the remaining 2 recording the sound of the audience and hall ambience), so making the surround versions was a question of spreading these elements out around the listener without losing the fire and directness that makes this one of the greatest live records. My hope is that hearing it in this way makes it feel even more like you’re there, a new experience of something that will be instantly familiar to people who love this record, but also one where they can hear it in a fresh way.

This 1972 double album collected singles (many of which were especially remixed for the album), live material, and out-takes. CD 1 in the new edition includes the original 1972 versions, as well as a number of previously unreleased tracks from the era, while CDs 2 and 3 feature my stereo remixes. Although I’ve already mixed many of these tracks for the series of Tull expanded editions, the label and I thought it would be interesting for me to revisit some of them to reflect the different choices made for the compilation versions when they were remixed back in 1972. Additionally there are other brand new mixes, including the Carnegie Hall live tracks which occupied side 3 of the original album, and the entire show from which they were taken on CDs 4 and 5 (a 5.1 mix of the concert appears on the Blu-ray).

Lana Topham’s astounding restoration of the 1972 version of the film has been years in the making and looks like it could have been filmed yesterday, so I wanted to create an audio mix to match, with as much clarity as I could achieve from the multitrack tapes.

Recorded on 1st August 2024 at Centennial Hall in Frankfurt, Germany and performed by Nick Mason, Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Dom Beken, and Lee Harris, this version of Echoes is a great 23-minute rendition of the epic from Meddle.

Now I’ve also created a Dolby Atmos of the album, which will be released on a blu-ray exclusively available from the Rhino Music online store on 25th April. The album has been mixed several times before, and the blu-ray also includes my 2016 stereo remix, a vintage 70’s quad mix, and a 5.1 mix done in 2003 by John Kellogg. There will also be a repressing of the 2LP vinyl of my stereo remix for the occasion.
